SHAKESPEARE’S Twelth Night is the latest production from Nantwich Players.

This play opens on February 19 with a large cast, which includes many new members of the award-winning drama group, under the guiding hand of guest director Gordon Hamlin.

Featuring young people behaving foolishly, older people behaving badly, identical twins and unrequited love, the Players are staging Shakespeare’s darkly comic play in traditional period style and costume.

Players’ spokesman Charlotte Lightbody said: “The actors are thrilled to have the opportunity to stage a Shakespeare play and our audiences are in for a treat.

“It is a sad fact that some people have never seen a Shakespeare play.

“We may not have David Tennant as our star but we hope people will overcome their caution and join our regular audiences for a good night out.

“We have a lovely little theatre with a licensed bar and a very friendly welcome.

“We have also been pleased to discover how popular Twelfth Night is this year.

“The Royal Shakespeare Company production in London stars Richard Wilson as Malvolio, and Sir Peter Hall is to direct it at the National Theatre in the autumn, with his daughter Rebecca as Viola, so we are in good company.”

Tickets are £6 and are on sale now at the Nantwich Tourist Office on 01270 537359.

The show runs from February 19 to 27.

DETECTIVES in Crewe are investigating a street attack that left an elderly woman with serious injuries.

Police are now appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward.

The woman was attacked after she left a cashpoint at the Sainsbury’s store in Brooklyn Street at about 11.40am on Tuesday morning.

A man knocked her to the ground and snatched her handbag. He ran off along Brooklyn Street and Furnival Street and then turned right into Nelson Street.

The woman was taken to hospital.

Detective Constable Dave Lloyd said: “She has serious injuries to her arm and she was very badly shaken up.

“This was a nasty attack carried out by someone who did not care what happened to his victim.

“We know the attacker was with three other men shortly before the incident.

“We would ask them, as well as anyone else who saw anything before or after the attack to get in touch and we would like to hear from anyone who recognises the description of him.”

The man is described as white, in his early 20s, heavily built with a very thick-set neck and cropped hair. He was wearing a light grey jogging top and hood and black track suit bottoms.

Anyone with information is asked to contact DC Dave Lloyd on the Cheshire Police Information Line 0845 4580000.

Alternatively people can leave information anonymously on the Crimestoppers line 0800 555111.

2:30pm Thursday 26th November 2009

A LOTTO prize of £137,591 has yet to be claimed in the Crewe and Nantwich area.

National Lottery players are being urged to double-check their tickets for the chance to claim the prize.

The mystery owner of the winning ticket matched five numbers and the bonus ball in the Lotto draw on Saturday November 7.

The winning Lotto numbers on that date were 19, 21, 39, 44, 45, 49 and the bonus ball was 47.

The lucky ticket-holder has until 5.30pm on Thursday May 6 to make their claim. If no-one comes forward with the winning ticket before the prize claim deadline, then the prize money, plus all the interest it has generated, will go to the Good Causes.

A National Lottery spokesperson said: “We’re desperate to find this mystery ticket-holder and unite them with their winnings – this amazing prize could really make a huge difference to somebody’s life.

“We’re urging everyone to check their old tickets again or look anywhere a missing ticket could be hiding. “Try checking in the pockets of clothing, in wallets, bags and down the back of the sofa – someone out there could literally be sitting on a fortune!

“We have the champagne on ice and our fingers crossed that the lucky winner comes forward to claim their win.”

Anyone who believes they have the winning ticket should call the National Lottery Line on 0845 910 0000.

Ashbrook Towers Farm is a Luxury bed and breakfast accommodation , Set in beautiful Cheshire countryside near Nantwich.

The property was built approximately 200 years ago and began life as a working farm. In around 1870 the farm was converted to a coach house to accommodate the coaches and horses for the then recently constructed Ashbrook Towers – a mansion house built upon the Ashbrook Estate. In October 1987, the property was purchased by its present owners David and Anne Jones who have sympathetically renovated Ashbrook Towers Farm to provide extremely spacious, modern and comfortable accommodation set in the heart of rural Cheshire.

Ashbrook Towers Farm is approached via a long drive that is edged with trees. Its secluded location makes it the ideal spot for unwinding, walking and visiting the local attractions. There are a variety of places to dine only a short drive away, including high quality restaurants and good quality pub food.

We have three rooms available, The Oak Room, The Edwardian Room and The Edwardian Suite. Each room has been lovingly restored to retain character and a host of original features with far reaching views over beautiful Cheshire parkland. All rooms have been individually designed and all are en-suite, complete with tea and coffee making facilities, hairdryer and flat screen televisions. A separate staircase and entrance hall accesses our guest accommodation.

Sainsbury’s has got the go ahead to demolish its Nantwich store and erect one 50% bigger on the same site.

The controversial plans for the Middlewich Road store were finally approved by Cheshire East Council yesterday.
Despite opposition from Nantwich Town Council, the Strategic Planning Board decided the new Sainsbury’s store would not have a detrimental impact

Work on the new Sainsbury’s store in Nantwich could start as early as January 2010, the company said.

Sainsbury’s was given permission this week to demolish the existing store on Middlewich Road and build one 50% larger.

It will also create 75 new jobs, despite some organisations against the development because of fears it will impact on town centre trade.

Now Sainsbury’s says preparation work on the store could start in early 2010, with the new store expected to be opened by mid-late 2011.

Jo Try, regional development executive, who heads the Sainsbury’s new store property team in the north of England, said: “We’re delighted that Cheshire East Council’s Strategic Planning Board was minded to grant planning permission.

“Members clearly saw the hard work that has gone in to addressing the concerns of members, officers and the public, particularly since the last planning meeting in July.

“We have taken on board the comments of local residents, businesses, the Civic Society and Nantwich Town Council throughout the process in order to design the best possible scheme.

“The store will create around 75 new jobs in addition to the 330 staff already working in store. The revamped store should provide a much improved shopping experience for customers.”

Battle of Nantwich
25th January 1644

By the end of 1643 the Royalists had achieved considerable success in the North West, securing all of Cheshire with the exception of Nantwich, where the parliamentarian garrison held out under siege. The Northern Association forces had retreated on Hull after their defeat by the royalists the previous summer at Adwalton Moor, but now Sir Thomas Fairfax advanced to the relief of the town, marching with some 5,000 troops of out of Lincolnshire.

Fought on the 25th January, Nantwich was the first battle of 1644. It was a substantial victory for the parliamentarians. Nantwich was relieved, the royalist domination of Cheshire was over, royalist artillery and the baggage train was captured and several senior royalist officers taken prisoner. It marked the beginning of the recovery of the parliamentarian cause in the North. For Fairfax himself it was an important step on the ladder which, by April 1645, would bring him command of parliament’s New Model Army. However, the overwhelming lesson from Nantwich, if such a lesson were needed, was the influence of terrain upon the nature and outcome of battle.

The battlefield remains largely enclosed pasture, as it was in 1644. The pattern of hedgerows today is very similar to that in 19th century, though with some loss, but it is uncertain which, if any of these survive from the time of the battle. The area of action where the garrison broke out in support of Fairfax is being encroached upon by development on the edge of the town, while the Shropshire union canal has cut across the very heart of the battlefield. However, whilst the latter is an intrusion into the landscape, it does provide a pleasant walk and, with other rights of way, enables good access to the battlefield by foot. The canal bridge at Acton provides a particularly fine view of the battlefield.

A NEW play area has been opened at Monks Coppenhall Children’s Centre in Crewe.

The decked area is called Play Deck, a name suggested by Su Hawkes, winner of the naming competition organised by the centre.

Monks Coppenhall Children’s Centre provides various services for children and their parents, designed and geared according to the needs of the community. At Monks Coppenhall there are various sessions ranging from child minding and stay-and-play sessions to those specially geared to mums who have experienced multiple births.

There are further sessions supporting families with children who have hearing problems.

Councillor Paul Findlow said: “We are delighted to be able to provide this much-needed outside space.

“It is essential that children can play.

“They are our future and play is an essential part of their development. It is important that we as a Council recognise this importance and make every effort to provide areas where they can play imaginatively and naturally, but most importantly, safely.”
